UPDATE^
НА СВОЙ СТРАХ И РИСК (отключение проверки версии прошивок):
YMMV, as this command disables the hardware support check of the update. This, I presume, may brick your device if you don't provide the correct update file.
- SSH into your device.
- Type/paste in: sudo vi /usr/bin/ubnt-upgrade
- Scroll down to line 504
- Hold shift+i to enter input mode in Vi
- Add a # in front of line 504. Like this: #exit 1
- Press esc followed by :wq, to save and close the file
- Proceed with the upgrade, wich should now finnish without errors. Note that the text "Upgrade image does not support the device. Upgrade failed." will be displayed, but the update will continue anyways...
At first I thought that the update didn't work, because when the USG booted up it did not get a WAN IP.
That was problably my ISP not releasing the IP lease as fast as one could wish. I waited over night and after that it worked, and the device got a WAN IP address.
USG 3P with version 4.4.44.5213844 installed. Mission accomplished!

UPDATE^ (создание нового USB стика с операционной системой):
(on windows)
- Downloaded the 4.2.0 'as shipped' firmware/disk image from here: https://dl.ubnt-ut.com/cmb/USG-4_2_0-shipped.img.bz2
- Unzipped the above file with 7zip
- Downloaded and installed "imgUSB" from Passmark, and created an image of the USB disk inside the USG (just in case, as a backup)
- Downloaded Rufus (http://www.rufus.ie) and then burnt the USB disk removed from the USG, with the image unzipped in #1.
- Waited for it to boot up, then used WinSCP to put the latest image (4.4.44.5213844) into the /home/ubnt/ directory, ensuring it was named 'upgrade.tar'
- Ran the recommended command: "sudo syswrapper.sh upgrade upgrade.tar" - which did SOMETHING but ended up just having the USG flash it's white/blue LED light at me for infinity.
- Instead logged into it with Putty (could have used a terminal from WinSCP however) and just ran the command "upgrade /home/ubnt/upgrade.tar"
- Waited a while, and it finally booted up with the 4.4.44.5213844 firmware, and was available for adoption.
- Because my network is pre-existing, and not on the 192.168.1.0/24 range, i had to log back into the device after it was adopted and move it into the correct network after #8, however after that it all came good.
Hopefully this helps others - didn't really see any step-by-step guides around for this.
